Affordable Housing continues to be a critical need on Kauai, especially in these uncertain economic times.   The main efforts of local government have been employee housing at developments such as Kauai Lagoons, Kukui’ula, and The Princeville Hotel.  Although helpful for employees, it does nothing to help create the long-term financial stability that home ownership can provide.

In a way, we’re moving into a new ‘Plantation’ economic model, where worker housing is provided.  But if you lose your job, you lose your home, too.  We may have moved out of the sugar cane fields, but aren’t we creating a Resort Plantation Economy for local workers??

What are your thoughts?  Let me know your ideas for better affordable housing on Kauai….
