The Garden Island reports this morning that our Planning Department has added 3 new staff members. Some of the areas hopefully the additional staff and expertise will help:
- Shoreline management – recent law changes have made the process of obtaining a SMA clearance
to build on oceanfront property very lengthy and confusing.
- Vacation Rental Ordinance – All Non-Conforming vacation rentals must register a non-conforming use certificate with Planning by October 15th if they are located outside a VDA (Visitor Destination Area) by October 15th. TVR Form download from www.kauai.gov. Fore more information, especially for vacation rental owners, visit KAVA “Kauai Alternative Vacation Accommodation Association”, including a recent TVR legal update from attorney Jonathan Chun, and links to all the forms you need if you are a vacation rental owner.
- ADU Ordinance – The ADU Ordinance which extended the ‘sunset’ of the rights to build an Additional Dwelling Unit has a permit approval deadline of December 31st, 2009.
- Growth and Development – at our annual Kauai Board of Realtors meeting two years ago, the head of the County Planning Department shared with us that Kauai has outgrown the plans the County has in place for 2025. There’s a desperate need for the CZO Plan to be revised and updated.
It’s good news that our Planning Department is getting the staff and resources needed to help address these critical issues that are so important to the quality of life on Kauai.
